WHAT’S IN A NAME

American Goldfinch– Spinus tristis
Name roots: (Gr. spinos unknown bird, typically dealt with as a kind of finch; L. tristis, ” unfortunate”)

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The American Goldfinch is a little bird that determines 4.3 to 5 inches in length and has a wingspan of 7.5 to 8.7 inches. The male’s reproducing plumage is brilliant yellow with a black forehead, wings and tail. In winter season the fantastic yellow is change by a much duller olive-yellow. The woman is a dull yellow-brown tint that just somewhat lightens up throughout the summertime. The bird’s costs is cone-shaped and brief.

American Goldfinches are seen in southern Saskatchewan throughout the reproducing season and are generally found from May to September.
